Ryszard Antoni Legutko

Initiator

Born on 24 December 1949 in Krakow, Ryszard Antoni Legutko is a Polish scholar, politician, professor of philosophy, columnist, author of books on social and political themes, translator and commentator of works by Plato, as well as a former senator and Deputy Speaker of the Polish Senate in its 6th term of office, Minister for National Education for three months in 2007, former Secretary of State at the Office of President Lech Kaczyński and Member of the European Parliament in its 7th and 8th term of office.

  • He graduated in English Philology in 1973 and in Philosophy in 1976 from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
  • In 1991 he was awarded the degree of doctor habilitatus (title of habilitation thesis: “A Critique of Democracy in Plato’s Political Philosophy”) and in 1998 he was awarded the degree of Professor of Humanities. In 2003 he became Ordinary Professor.
  • He is a lecturer at the Jagiellonian University. He specialises in political and social philosophy, ancient philosophy and in the history of philosophy.
  • In the 1980s he was an editor of the underground magazine “Arka” in Krakow.
  • Until October 2005 he was the President of the “Centre for Political Thought” Education and Research Association (Towarzystwo Edukacyjno-Naukowe Ośrodek Myśli Politycznej), which he co-founded in 1992.
  • He is a frequent contributor to such newspapers as: Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta Polska, Gazeta Polska Codziennie, W Sieci, Do Rzeczy, Nasz Dziennik and the English Critical Review.
  • From 2005 to 2007 he was the Deputy Speaker of the Polish Senate.
  • He sat on the Human Rights and Rule of Law Committees.
  • President of the Polish-Israeli Parliamentary Group (2006-2007)
  • President of the Council of the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation (2006-2007)
  • In 2007 he was appointed Minister for National Education in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński.
  • Project: Gifted Student - Participation of Tertiary Education Facility Staff in Extended Education Programmes for Outstanding Students
  • Work on the new core curriculum intended to strike a balance between humanities and sciences.
  • A required reading list developed to limit the reading of excerpts.
  • Draft reform of the secondary school leaving examination in Poland - eliminating a presentation as a compulsory exam element.
  • A project consisting in the organisation of school trips to national remembrance sites.
  • From December 2007 to April 2009 he was Secretary of State for Education, Culture and National Heritage in the Office of the President of Poland.
  • President of the Council for Education and Research under the auspices of the Polish President.
  • Organiser of the work of the Round Table on Education (October-November 2008)

  • Organiser of the celebrations of the 65th Anniversary of the Genocide of Poles in Volhynia

  • In the European Parliament elections held on 7 June 2009 he won a mandate in the Lower Silesian and Opole Constituency.
  • In the European Parliament elections held on 25 May 2014 he won a mandate in the Małopolskie-Świętokrzyskie Constituency.
